New Delhi: Yesterday, the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial (Amendment) Bill, 2019, was passed in Rajya Sabha, which seeks to oust the Congress President from being the permanent member of the Trusts that controls the memorial.
The bill, which was passed earlier in the Lok Sabha, was passed with voice vote in Rajya Sabha. Barring Congress and Left parties most of the other parties supported the bill to ouster the Congress chief from the Trust.
Minister of State for Culture and Tourism, Prahlad Singh Patel, said this bill will end the political influence of the trust. He also rejected that the government was rewriting history.
The Minister clarified that Punjab Chief Minister would be in the Trust, which will allow the Congress party’s representation in it.
The bill stipulates that the leader of the single largest opposition party in the Lok Sabha to be part of the Trust. It also states that the Central government will have the power to terminate the term of a nominated trustee before the end of his or her term.
