New Delhi: The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief, Swati Maliwal, wrote to Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, saying that she would not break her fast till the stringent Andhra Pradesh’s Disha Law is implemented across the country. The Disha Law stipulates awarding death penalty to those accused of rape and gang-rape and to give judgment within 21 days.
Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly had passed the bill yesterday. The state hastily passed the bill after a veterinary was gang-raped and killed by four persons. This raised huge protests across the country. All the four accused were later shot by the police after they tried to escape.
The DCW chief wrote to the PM, “I fervently appeal to you to immediately enact the Disha Bill for the entire country. I have lost more than 8 Kg in these 12 days and am in immense physical pain but I assure you that I will continue this indefinite fast until ‘Disha’ law is enacted in the country.”
She also said that parliamentarians wasted crucial time during the Winter Session by not taking any constructive decisions to ensure the safety of women and girls.
