New Delhi: The Union Minister Prakash Javadekar laughes off claims of Kerala and West Bengal governments’ claim that the National Population Register (NPR) will be used as the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The Kerala and West Bengal governments have stayed all its activities regarding the NPR.
The Central government in a statement said, ” Currently, there is no proposal to conduct nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC), on the basis of data collected through National Population Register (NPR)
Prakash Javadekar laughed off such claims by the Kerala and West Bengal governments and said that such a claim was never made by the Central government.
Javadekar has said that the Union Cabinet has decided to conduct the census of India 2021 and updating the National Population Register. He reminded that the NPR is just a self-declaration where no document or biometric is required. Assam will not have NPR because the NRC was undertaken in the state to find out illegal migrants.
The West Bengal government had earlier in the week suspended all activities in the preparation and updation of NPR. Kerala too followed suit and decided to stay all works on NPR.
