New Delhi: The violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University last night is being condemned from all sections of the political spectrum and the public. Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar condemned the attack at JNU. Incidentally, both are former students at the university.

Nirmala Sitharaman in her tweet said, “Horrifying images from JNU — the place I know & remember was one for fierce debates & opinions but never violence… This govt, regardless of what has been said the past few weeks, wants universities to be safe spaces for all students.”

S. Jaishankar tweeted, “Condemn the violence unequivocally. This is completely against the tradition and culture of the university.”

While NITI Aayog CEO, Amitabh Kanth said that the incident at JNU is extremely sad and tragic, the Principal Scientific Advisor to the government, K. Vijayraghavan said that campus are places for learning, discussion, debates and research. He added that what happened at JNU is “unhesitatingly and unequivocally condemned”.

Human Resource Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal said that such acts of violence and anarchy will not be tolerated.

Last night a mob armed with sticks entered the JNU campus and thrashed students and teachers. Scuffles between leftist students and ABVP members were going on for some time. The left student activists attacked the ABVP students and around 26 members were injured earlier in the day.

Reports say that the left student organization members had been blocking students from paying exam fees and ABVP opposed this move.
