Mumbai: BJP leader and former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, gave a moving tribute to Veer Savarkar saying that he is not just a person but a thought. His comments came after Shiv Sena is split in their respects to the great freedom fighter.
While Sena leader Sanjay Raut asked Congress not to oppose Bharat Ratna for Savarkar, Yuva Sena president and son of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray tried to distance the part from Savarkar.
Devendra Fadnavis said, “The great swatyantraveer Savarkar is not just a person but he is a thought, and that thought can never be the history. It will continue to be our present as well as the future.”
Sanjay Raut said that those opposing Bharat Ratna for Savarkar must spend two days in Andaman Cellular Jail where the freedom fighter was incarcerated during Independence struggle.
However, the son of Shiv Sena chief tried to save the alliance with Congress rather than support the icon of Hindutva. The split in Shiv Sena between those who are ideologically inclined and those who are opportunists.
