New Delhi: In a sign that Jammu and Kashmir is finally coming closer to the mainstream political life of India, the central government proposed a delimitation commission to draw the Assembly constituencies of the state. The delimitation exercise is a forerunner to the Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir.

Reports say that the Delimitation Commission will be headed by a former Supreme Court judge while one member from Jammu and Kashmir administration and another from the Election Commission will be part of the panel.

The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Bill, 2019, says that the constituencies of Jammu and Kashmir will be increased from 107 to 114.

The Legislative Assembly of the Union Territory was dissolved on 21 November, 2018, by the Governor. The BJP National President, J. P. Nadda, said that elections to the state will be conducted after the delimitation exercise is complete.

Nadda said, “The delimitation of Assembly constituencies should take place as per the area and population. It should take place in all three regions – Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh. We feel that this should take place immediately. Wherever wrongs have taken place have to be corrected.”
