New Delhi: Union Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, hailed Supreme Court’s verdict that permanent commission will apply to all women officers in the Indian Army in service, irrespective of their years of service.
In a tweet, Rajnath Singh, said, “I wholeheartedly welcome Supreme Court’s judgement on giving Women officers permanent commission in Armed Forces. PM Modi has supported the idea of the permanent commission for women & announced change in policy in his Independence Day speech in 2018.”
He said that the plan was to recruit women in probing crime cases to assisting army in field operations when required.
Rajnath Singh reminded that the percentage of women in the Armed Forces has gone up. Before 2016, it was just 2.5% working in non combat roles. By 2019, the Army has now 3.89% of women, the Navy 6.7% and the Air Force consists of 13.28% women.
