New Delhi: JNU PHd student and anti-CAA activist Sharjeel Imam was arrested for the second time on Monday by the Delhi Crime Branch.
According to the police, he is suspected to be involved in the December 15 Jamia violence that broke out during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. An accused in the case opened up that he was provoked by Imam’s inflammatory speeches. A Delhi court subsequently sent Imam to one-day police custody.
Presently, he is in the judicial custody after sedition charges were slapped against him for the ‘Cut Assam from India’ speech.
Imam (31) was earlier booked by the inter-state cell of the Crime Branch under IPC sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, etc) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) over a speech he delivered at AMU. Besides Delhi, police in Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have booked him for alleged sedition.
Sharjeel Imam had distributed pamphlets among Muslims to create fear using false information about CAA. He also used Babri Masjid demolition and Kashmir issue to incite violence among the minority community.
