New Delhi: The Delhi AAP government today gave permission to prosecute the former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union President, Kanhaiya Kumar, for sedition. The move comes four years after the student leader was slapped with the sedition case in 2016.
The Delhi Police had on Wednesday written to the state Home Secretary requesting permission to prosecute Kanhaiya Kumar.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Cell, Pramod Kushwah in his letter said, “It is requested to expedite the process to accord prosecution sanction under Section 196 CrPC as required for the offence under Chapter VI of the IPC, that is, Section 124A IPC.”
However, Kanhaiya Kumar responded that the sedition case against him was used for political gains. He is accused for leading a procession in which anti-national slogans were raised on 9 February, 2016. It happened at an event organized to condemn the death of Parliament accused culprit Afzal Guru.
Besides Kanhaiya Kumar, 10 other JNU students including Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya and seven Kashmiri students were also accused in the case.
