New Delhi: COVID-19 cases in India today spiked to 386 mainly due to the Tabilighi Jamaat organized in Delhi. The Union Health Ministry pointed finger at the event for the sudden rise of COVID-19 cases in the country. The total positive cases of the infection in the country now stand at 1,637 with 38 deaths.
Health Ministry Joint Secretary, Lav Agarwal, said, “As several people who had attended the religious congregation in the national capital, have returned to their respective hometowns, the state governments have been asked to initiate rigorous contact tracing and containment strategies.”
The Tablighi Jamaat’s religious event took place at Alami Markaz at Nizamuddin in Delhi earlier this month.
The Joint Secretary said that 1,800 people who attended the event are under isolation. The states are also asked to get in touch with those who came in contact with the infected persons.
He also said that 5000 coaches of Railways have been turned into quarantine facilities and have set up 3.2 lakh isolation beds. There are now 21,486 relief camps across the country.
