New Delhi: As per an internal government’s assessment, it is expected that India may witness a spike of coronavirus cases in the first week of May, followed by a decline in the numbers, sources in the Home Ministry said.
States which imposed lockdown prior to official declaration have seen a smooth battle and the overall numbers have declined.
Rajasthan, Punjab and Bihar were the first states to announce lockdown and have managed to put a bar against the rising numbers, as compared to states which went for partial curbs at first like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended the lockdown to May 3 earlier this week, India has added around 2,800 coronavirus positive cases taking the total well past 12,000. Some 36,000 people have been placed either in isolation in government facilities or have been home quarantined. As of Thursday, nearly 3.6 lakh people were in isolation facilities or home quarantined.
The government foresees a surge in cases in the next few days and the challenge would be also to contain the spread of sporadic cases.
