Lucknow: In a major development for the protection of cows, the Yogi Adityanath cabinet has approved the Cow-Slaughter Prevention (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020. The amendments aim to protect the cow and prevent crimes related to cow slaughter.

CM Yogi Adityanath chaired the cabinet meeting through video-conferencing, where it was approved to amend the Section 5A of the UP Cow Slaughter Prevention Act 1955.

The amendment makes sure for stricter punishment for violators and allows the publication of pictures of the accused in prominent spots in the city. It also permits the prosecution of the driver and owner of the vehicle which was used for carrying cow for the purpose of slaughter.

The accused will attract a jail term from a minimum of one year to a maximum of ten years and imposes monetary fines between Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.

If the cow is found malnourished with the intention of endangering their life, rigorous imprisonment may be awarded for at least one year, which may extend to seven years. . It also attracts punishment if there is a danger to their lives through physical damage or mutilation.

The expenditure incurred on the maintenance of the captured cows will be recovered from the owner of the vehicle for a period of one year or until the cow or bovine is released, whichever is earlier, according to the proposed legislation.
