India, Afghanistan and China had contested the elections to Commission on Status of Women. China could not even surpass the half-way mark in the elections.
India will now be a member of the United Nation’s Commission on Status of Women for four years, 2021 to 2025.
The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. A functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), it was established by ECOSOC resolution 11(II) of 21 June 1946.
The CSW is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
This comes at a time when India and China are locked in a standoff at Eastern Ladakh, despite several high-level military talks, there has been no positive outcome.
