Ram Vilas Paswan, one of the tallest Dalit leaders in Bihar and founder of the Lok Janshakti Party, passed away at the age of 74 on Thursday. He was the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in the Narendra Modi cabinet.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also visited his residence and paid condolences to the family.

In his role as food minister, Paswan oversaw the world’s biggest food welfare programme, under which the government gives low-cost rice and wheat to India’s millions of poor people.
