Puducherry, Jun 30 (UNI):   Tension prevailed near the legislative assembly here on Wednesday as fishermen, who thronged the area to meet Chief Minister N Rangaswamy, was prevented by the police by erecting barricades.

The fishermen want to seek permission from Mr Rangaswamy to use Purse Seine Net (Surukku vala) for fishing.

It may be noted that the Central government had banned the use of Purse Seine net and the Tamil Nadu government also followed the suit.

However, a section of the Puducherry fishermen are still using the same and a large number of fishermen thronged the assembly area to meet the Chief Minister in this connection. Heavy police pickets have been posted.

The police later allowed five representatives of the fishermen inside the assembly who held talks with Mr Rangaswamy.
