New Delhi, Jul 9 (UNI):   Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reviewed India’s preparations for the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

He also took a stock of the logistical details, vaccination status, multi-disciplinary support being given to the sportspersons.

On July 13, Mr Modi will interact with the Tokyo-bound athletes. The meeting will be virtual owing to Covid situation, the government officials said.

In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister said, “Reviewed preparations for facilitation of India’s contingent at @Tokyo2020. Discussed the logistical details, their vaccination status, the multi-disciplinary support being given”.

In another message, he said, “On behalf of 130 crore Indians, I would be interacting with the Olympics bound athletes on 13th July to wish them luck. Let us all #Cheer4India.”

The Tokyo Olympics will be held from July 23 to August 8 this year.

The first batch of 120 athletes of India’s Olympic squad is to depart for Tokyo on July 17 by a charter Air India flight, the officials added.

In view of the raging Covid-19 cases, the Tokyo Olympics will be held under a state of emergency in Japan without spectators and the Indian Government has also decided not to send any officials with the contingent owing to the restrictions.

The Indian Embassy at Tokyo has been assigned the responsibility to take care of the Indian squad during their stay there.

Meanwhile, in Tokyo, the welcoming ceremony for the Olympic flame began on Friday at the Komazawa Olympic Park Athletic Stadium.

Governor Yuriko Koike opened the ceremony and accepted the report on the flame’s arrival in the Japanese capital region.
