New Delhi: Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court Prashant Kumar Mishra and senior advocate Kalapathy Venkataraman Viswanathan took oath as Supreme Court judges on Friday. The two new judges of Supreme Court were administered the oath of office by DY Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India. The Supreme Court is now at its full strength of 34 judges. Four more vacancies are likely to arise by the second week of May.
The names of Justice Mishra and Viswanathan were unanimously recommended by a five-member Collegium headed by CJI on May 16. The warrant of appointment of them as judges of Supreme Court was issued from office of President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday. The appointments were announced by new Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Twitter.

KV Viswanathan, a distinguished member of the Bar of the Supreme Court has wide experience and profound knowledge and is known in the legal fraternity for his integrity. He would be in line to the 58th Chief Justice of India in 2030, succeeding JB Pardiwala as top judge. He can assume office till his retirement on May 25, 2031. Viswanathan has become the tenth name in the list of lawyers to be appointed to the apex court directly from the Bar. He will also be the fourth such person to become the CJI, following Justices SM Sikri, UU Lalit and PS Narasimha.
Justice Mishra, who hails from Chhattisgarh High Court, was appointed as the Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court on October 13, 2021. With his appointment, Chhattisgarh got a representation on the Supreme Court bench. He was appointed as a judge of the High Court of Chhattisgarh on December 10, 2009. Justice Mishra has served as a judge of the High Court for over 13 years and ranks at serial number 21 in All-India Seniority List of judges.
