New Delhi: Shanghai Cooperation Operation (SCO) summit to be hosted by India on July 4, 2023, in virtual format. It was on September 16, 2022, that India became the rotating presidency of the SCO at the Samarkand summit in Uzbekistan. The Indian SCO summit was previously expected to take place physically in New Delhi, similar to the SCO foreign minister’s meeting at Goa in May.
The SCO countries, such as China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, are all invited to attend the summit. Moreover, observer nations like Mongolia, Iran, and Belarus are also invited.
According to the traditions of the SCO, the summit is also expected to have guest attendees, with the nation of Turkmenistan joining along with international organisations like the UN, ASEAN, and CIS.
The theme of this year’s SCO summit is “Towards a SECURE SCO.” SECURE is an acronym that stands for Security, Economy and Trade, Connectivity, Union, Respect for Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity, and Environment. All these issues have also been highlighted under the presidency of India.
Meanwhile, India’s SCO chairmanship has been a period of deep engagement and mutually beneficial cooperation among the member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. So far, India has hosted a total of 134 meetings and events, including 14 ministerial meetings. As a culmination of the leadership, India is expected to see a successful SCO summit.
