Bengaluru: A report said that the Syro Malabar Church has welcomed the Congress government’s decision to scrap the anti-conversion law in Karnataka. The church said that this decision gives hope to all those who love democracy.
The Syro Malabar Church’s view on the Siddaramaiah government’s decision was outlined by the church’s Public Affairs Commission.
The church said that the anti-conversion laws usually turns out to be oppressive towards the minorities. The church also demanded that anti conversion laws implemented in other states should also be scrapped.
Karnataka, under BJP, had brought the anti conversion bill or the Right to Freedom of Religion Bill, 2022. It was aimed at stopping fraudulent activities and to stop forceful and induced conversions.
The anti conversion law was brought by the BJP after it was noticed that conversion by allurement, force, fraudulent means etc. were done in many instances. This disturbed the social order in the state and the government wanted a law that could address this menace.
A report quoted BJP Leader Tejasvi Surya on the removal of the anti conversion law by the Congress. He said, “Anti-conversion law was aimed to stop fraudulent and coercive conversions.” Tejasvi added, “By repealing this act, Congress has once again shown that it places its vote bank interest over and above the spirit of the constitution and the law of the land.”
Syro Malabar Catholic Church is a Kerala based church. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a recent visit to Kerala had met with eight top Church priests including the head of Syro Malabar Catholic Church, Cardinal George Alencherry.
