New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a momentous state visit to the United States on Tuesday. Prior to his departure, PM Modi took to Twitter to announce his itinerary, which includes various engagements in New York City and Washington, DC. These include participating in the Yoga Day celebrations at the United Nations Headquarters, holding talks with President Joe Biden, delivering an address to a joint session of the US Congress, and more.
The invitation for this historic visit came from President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, and it will commence in New York with PM Modi leading the celebrations of the International Day of Yoga on June 21. Subsequently, he will travel to Washington, DC, where he will receive a ceremonial welcome at the White House on June 22. There, he will engage in high-level discussions with President Biden, followed by a State Dinner hosted in his honour by the President and First Lady.
One notable highlight of the visit is PM Modi’s address to a joint session of the US Congress on June 22. This invitation, extended by both the House of Representatives and the Senate, showcases bipartisan support and respect for the Indian Prime Minister. It is noteworthy that PM Modi will become the first Indian Prime Minister to address a joint session of the US Congress twice. The invitation letter from President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden commended PM Modi’s previous historic address, which played a crucial role in strengthening the bond between the two countries. The White House emphasised the significance of this occasion by reaffirming the deep and close alliance between the United States and India.
Expressing gratitude for this privilege, PM Modi eagerly anticipates delivering his address to the joint session. In his message, he reiterated the pride India takes in having a Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership with the US, built upon shared democratic values, strong people-to-people connections, and a steadfast commitment to global peace and prosperity.
On June 23, the Prime Minister will also attend a luncheon hosted by US Vice President Kamala Harris and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Additionally, he has planned several interactions with prominent CEOs, professionals, and stakeholders, along with meetings with members of the Indian Diaspora.
Following his engagements in the United States, PM Modi will proceed to Cairo for a state visit to Egypt, scheduled for June 24–25.
