Guwahati: With great enthusiasm, devotees from various parts of the country have begun their pilgrimage to Guwahati in preparation for the highly anticipated four-day-long Ambubachi Mela, set to commence on June 22 at the renowned Kamakhya Temple. The Ambubachi Mela is an annual Hindu fair that celebrates the menstrual cycle of the goddess Maa Kamakhya. Nestled atop the picturesque Nilachal Hills in Assam, the Kamakhya Temple holds immense significance as one of the 51 Shaktipeeths in the country.
The Assam government and the Kamakhya Temple management committee have made extensive arrangements for this year’s Ambubachi Mela. Adequate provisions for food, drinking water facilities, toilets, and numerous tent houses have been set up to accommodate the devotees.
While devotees from across the country and even beyond its borders have made their way to the sacred site, some have noted that the heavy rainfall in Assam due to the onset of the monsoon may result in a comparatively smaller turnout this year.
Himadri Sarma, priest at the Kamakhya Temple, shared that the Pravritti (commencement) of this year’s Ambubachi Mela will take place at 2:30 am on June 22. “For three days and three nights, from June 22 to June 25, the Nivritti (culmination) will be observed. The Nivritti will conclude on the morning of June 26, after sunrise, when the main doors of the temple, closed during the Pravritti, will be reopened. Subsequently, VIP Darshan will be halted on June 26 and 27, prioritising general devotees. People will have the opportunity to perform puja and visit the Goddess Kamakhya through the general line,” he explained.
Enhanced security measures will be implemented throughout the duration of the Ambubachi Mela. “We will deploy around 900 cadets from NCC, Scout, and Guide, along with 100 temporary security personnel, for the Ambubachi Mela. Additionally, we have installed 400 additional CCTV cameras for security purposes. The administration plans to install more cameras in various locations,” Sarma added.
As the spiritual atmosphere builds and preparations reach their peak, devotees eagerly anticipate engaging in sacred rituals and seeking blessings at the Kamakhya Temple during the Ambubachi Mela.
