Dubai: Iran has taken into custody a team of fishermen from Ajman in UAE for crossing into the territorial waters of Iran.  The team include five persons, who are natives of Anchuthengu in Thiruvananthapuram district.

The Anchuthengu natives feared to be in Iran’s custody are Saju George (54), Arogya Raj (43), Denizon Paulose (48), Stalin Washington (44), and Dickson Ale (46). In addition, two persons from Paravoor and three from Tamil Nadu have also been taken into custody.

The families of the Anchuthengu natives were informed of their arrest last Monday itself. However, the families did not receive any further details about their whereabouts or condition. The families were also unable to make contact with them. This has thrown the families into a distress.

However, today morning Saju George was able to phone his family and inform them that they are still in Iranian police custody. He said that only an intervention by the government can make their release a possibility. Saju George was able to give this much information over the telephone, which lasted only a few minutes.

The families of the fishermen have requested that immediate actions must be taken by the national and state governments for their early release.
