Guwahati: The Assam government has decided to honor those who languished in prison during the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi during 1975. The Assamese government will give pension of Rs.15,000 per month to 91 persons who were imprisoned during the Emergency period.
According to the provision of the pension, the spouse or unmarried daughter is also eligible to get pension once the pensioner passes away.
The Assam Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, handed over the pension papers to the ninety-one persons who are entitled for the Government’s pension, during a program at the Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra in Guwahati.
The Assam CM also lauded the people who fought against the undemocratic Emergency. He said that those who fiercely opposed the Emergency and sacrificed to uphold democracy is a role model for today’s generation.
