New Delhi: The BJP has lambasted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his two-day visit to riot-stricken Manipur and dubbed him as “political opportunist”. The scathing attack was launched by BJP IT Cell chief, Amit Malviya. Rahul Gandhi is on a visit to Manipur on June 29 – 30. He is scheduled to visit Churachandpur.
Amit Malviya in a tweet said that Rahul Gandhi is “no messiah of peace just a political opportunist who wants to keep the pot boiling.”
The BJP leader also recalled the ethnic violence in 2015-17 when the Congress CM Okram Ibobi Singh-led government passed three bills. Malviya said that Rahul Gandhi did not visit the state then even once.
Amit Malviya said, “Not once did Rahul Gandhi visit Churachandpur in Manipur between 2015-17, to meet the victims of ethnic violence, that raged following Congress CM Okram Ibobi Singh Government’s decision to pass three bills – The Protection of Manipur People’s Bill, 2015, Manipur Land Revenue and Land Reforms (Seventh Amendment) Bill, 2015, and Manipur Shops and Establishment (Second Amendment) Bill, 2015, which were seen by the people of Churachandpur district, comprising mostly of Paites and Kukis, as ‘anti-Tribal’, and a ‘conspiracy’ by the majority Meitei community to grab Tribal land.”
Malviya reminded that nine men were shot and killed during the riots then. The protesting communities also had refused to cremate the victims for two years.
The BJP leader asked why Rahul Gandhi did not visit at that time. He added that his current visit to Manipur is not borne out of concern for people but his own selfish political agenda. Malviya added that this is the reason that no one trusts either him or the Congress.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi’s convoy was stopped by local police while en route to Churachandpur. He was stopped at the checkpoint near Bisnupur.
