Dehradun: In the midst implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India, it has been revealed that the Uttarakhand Civil Code Draft is likely to serve as the basis for the central government’s law, according to sources. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reportedly held a crucial meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi late on Monday to discuss the UCC. The meeting was attended by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, the Chairperson of the Uttarakhand UCC Drafting Committee.
Earlier, on June 30, Dhami had announced that the expert committee examining the UCC would soon submit the draft. “As per the promise made to the state’s people, today on June 30, the committee formed to prepare the draft of the Uniform Civil Code has completed its work. Soon Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. Jai Hind, Jai Uttarakhand!” Dhami tweeted.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong endorsement of the UCC has brought the issue back into the spotlight. PM Modi emphasised that the country cannot function with two different sets of laws and highlighted that the Uniform Civil Code is an integral part of the Constitution. The UCC aims to establish a single law for India that would apply to all religious communities in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.
PM Modi earlier stated that today, people are being instigated in the name of the Uniform Civil Code. He asks how a country can function with two laws when the Constitution also advocates for equal rights. The Supreme Court has also called for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code. These opposition parties are playing vote bank politics.”
