Srinagar: According to police, twelve persons were “bound down” for not standing during the playing of the national anthem at a gathering in this city in June where Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was present.
The police music band has also been subject to departmental action for failing to guarantee that everyone stood before the anthem was played, they added. The 12 people were arrested in accordance with CrPC sections 107 and 151, which give police the authority to detain or arrest a person or require them to sign a bond in anticipation of a crime.
Officials claim that some attendees of the ‘Pedal for Peace’ cycling event, organised by Jammu and Kashmir Police, which was held on June 25, decided not to stand up during national anthem, at the closing ceremony. The J&K administration strongly condemned the “disrespect” for the national anthem and initiated an investigation into the alleged transgression.
Sources from the police stated that 14 people had been taken into custody for disrespecting the national anthem, and a few police officers had also been suspended. Srinagar Police later refuted this claim in a tweet, claiming that 12 people had only been “bound down” under the Criminal Procedure Code, not arrested.
“There is an unverified news doing round that 14 policemen/persons have been arrested /suspended for disrespecting national anthem. It is clarified that the news is completely false, rather 12 persons have been generally bound down for good behaviour under sections 107/151 of CrPC,” Srinagar Police said on Twitter.
