Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party MP Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying, “You have shamed democracy.”
Speaking at a press conference in Kolkata, BJP MP, along with a fact-finding team, expressed his concerns about the situation.
“You (Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee) won because the court was strict. We will visit the affected areas. I belong to Bihar, where incidents like these are a matter of past. Elections are conducted in a peaceful manner in my state. I heard that a murder was reported on the counting day as well. You have shamed democracy,” said the BJP MP.
Taking a dig at the Bengal CM, he reminded her of her earlier fight against the oppressive left regime, questioning why her own political approach had become marred by atrocities and the need for constant court intervention. He further highlighted that even the Supreme Court had expressed concern over the violence in Bengal.
Furthermore, Prasad raised a query directed at Rahul Gandhi, the former president of the Congress party and former MP, inquiring about his silence on the reported mistreatment of his party workers.
In response to the violence that unfolded in West Bengal ahead of the Gram Panchayat elections, BJP President JP Nadda formed a committee led by Ravi Shankar Prasad with five members to investigate the matter.
The unrest in West Bengal erupted prior to the scheduled voting day on July 8. The day was marred by widespread violence, including incidents of ballot paper looting and rigging. As a result, the State Election Commission announced a re-polling for the Panchayat elections on July 10. The re-polling concluded on Monday, and the counting of votes took place on Tuesday, July 11, resulting in the Trinamool Congress securing a majority with 28,985 seats.
