Damascus: Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan, paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi in Damascus today. The MoS is currently on a two-day visit to Syria. He had visited the Syriac Patriarch of Antioch & all the East, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II on Wednesday.
Muraleedharan after visiting the Patriarch said, “Recalled my old connection with his Holiness. He reiterated his fondness for Kerala & expressed his hope for greater unity in the Syrian Orthodox Church.”
V Muraleedharan also met with the Minister of Higher Education in Damascus and interacted with Syrian students selected for an Indian scholarship. He appreciated the students’ enthusiasm and keenness to study in India.
This will be the first ministerial-level visit from India to Syria since August 2016. The Indian Embassy in Syria has remained open throughout the Syrian conflict. Both the countries have historically shared cordial relations build on deep-rooted people-to-people ties.
