Imphal: Four individuals have been apprehended in connection with the Manipur parade incident, as stated by Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh. He asserted that the state government is committed to seeking capital punishment for those found guilty, deeming the incident a “crime against humanity.” The Chief Minister emphasised that the government will not remain silent in the face of such heinous acts.
As of Thursday night, the Manipur police confirmed the arrest of four suspects, with Huirem Herodas Meitei, aged 32, being the only one whose identity has been disclosed.
Singh said an operation is on to book all others involved in the crime. “The state will not leave any stone unturned to book the culprits and award maximum punishment, such as capital punishment,” he said. The Chief Minister stressed the importance of raising awareness about the inhumane nature of such crimes and ensuring that such horrifying incidents against women and children do not recur in the future.
Moreover, the influential Meitei body-Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), has also condemned the “barbaric and uncivilised act of violence” inflicted on two women during the parade in a remote Manipur village. The incident came to light through a video on social media, showing two women from the Kuki-Zomi community being paraded naked by a mob, led by men, in violence-hit Manipur. The video, dated two months prior, later confirmed that the victims were not only stripped and paraded but also subjected to gang rape by the perpetrators.
