Uttar Pradesh: Mayawati, leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, has strongly criticised the Congress-led Rajasthan government’s recently passed Minimum Guaranteed Income Bill, 2023. According to Mayawati, the bill is driven more by political interest rather than genuine public welfare.
On Tuesday, the Rajasthan government introduced the Rajasthan Minimum Guaranteed Income Bill, 2023, aiming to provide guaranteed wages or pensions to the entire adult population of the state. However, Mayawati took to Twitter to express her dissatisfaction with the timing of this announcement, claiming that it was strategically made just before the assembly general election to serve the Congress government’s political interests.
The BSP chief tweeted, “The announcement of the minimum income guarantee scheme, etc by the Congress government of Rajasthan just before the assembly general election is less of public interest and more a decision of their political interest. Due to this, it is difficult for poor people to get immediate relief, yet is it appropriate to spend huge amounts of government money only on publicity?”
Furthermore, Mayawati highlighted the delay in initiating public welfare programmes, pointing out that such efforts should have been undertaken earlier, rather than in the lead-up to the electoral cycle. This critique likely refers to the ongoing political friction among the leaders within the Rajasthan Congress Party.
Last Friday, the Rajasthan Government passed the Rajasthan Minimum Guaranteed Income Bill, 2023, which guarantees 125 days of work per year for all families in the state. Additionally, the bill assures a minimum monthly pension of Rs 1000 for the elderly, specially-abled individuals, widows, and single women, with an annual increment of 15 percent.
