Pollachi: In a major development that could hurt the Congress in Tamil Nadu, the newly appointed working president of Tamil Nadu Congress, Mayura Jayakumar, is summoned by the Crime branch-CID in connection with the sensational Pollachi sex scandal case.
Mayura Jayakumar, the former State Youth Congress President, was named by the main accused Thirunavukkarasu. He alleged that he had met the Congress leader on February 12 when a college student alleged of sexual assault by the four member gang including Thirunavukkarasu.
The Pollachi sexual assault case has been raging across Tamil Nadu since a woman came out and accused four persons of sexual abuse. Further investigations have revealed that around 50 women have been victimised by the gang. Four persons were arrested in the case – Thirunavukkarasu, Sathish, Sabarirajan, and Vasanthkumar – and the Goonda Act slapped against them.
The case attracted widespread condemnation across the State with hundreds of students and women hitting the streets of Pollachi and other cities to demand strict action against the accused.
The case has been transferred to CB-CID following mass protests.
Mayura Jayakumar has denied knowledge of the accused and said that the accused along with his father might have come to greet him like hundreds of other well-wishers. Interestingly, reports say that Kanakaraj, the father of the accused, is associated with the Congress.
On CB-CID summons, the Congress leader said, “The CB-CID wanted to know if the criminal was at the Congress district office on the particular date. They didn’t ask any questions beyond this. I have given my statement in writing. I am ready to furnish any information whenever the authorities call me.”
