Ladakh: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday arrived in Drass in the Kargil district of Ladakh to mark the 24th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas. This significant day is observed each year to pay homage to the brave soldiers who lost their lives during the 1999 Kargil conflict with Pakistan.
In a solemn ceremony, the Defence Minister laid a wreath at the Kargil War Memorial, paying tribute to the fallen heroes who fought valiantly in the icy heights of Kargil. The event was attended by Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Navy Chief Admiral R Harikumar, and Chief Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan, all of whom also honoured the bravehearts with wreaths.
Prior to the commemoration event, the Army held a press briefing in Lamochen, Drass, where they showcased audio-visual accounts of the battles, highlighting the valour and sacrifices made by the jawans during the Kargil conflict in 1999.
The conflict was well-documented and involved the Indian Army fighting against Pakistani intruders in the challenging and harsh terrain of Kargil. It lasted for over two months, during which the Indian Army successfully reclaimed vantage points previously occupied by the intruders and raised the Tricolour in the territory recovered from the enemy. The conflict unfolded in the Dras, Kargil, and Batalik sectors of the Kargil district.
The commemoration event took place amidst the backdrop of the mountains, where the soldiers had fought fierce battles against the Pakistani intruders. The sombre mood was further accentuated by the military band’s solemn notes, resonating with the emotions of all present.
The event was graced by war heroes, Veer Naris, Veer Matas, and relatives of the fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives while serving their duty during the conflict. It served as a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice displayed by the soldiers during the Kargil War.
