New Delhi: The ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament entered its fifth day on Wednesday with the persisting logjam, primarily revolving around the situation in Manipur. On the 5th day, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A) alliance, representing the opposition, is expected to propose a no-confidence motion against the government in the Lok Sabha.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lower House, announced the alliance’s intentions to bring forth the no-confidence motion today. The opposition parties have been seeking various options, and a no-confidence motion is being considered due to its potential to elicit a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and also trigger a discussion on the Manipur violence issue.
Meanwhile, as the parliament reconvene today at 11 am, Union Minister Jitendra Singh to make statements regarding the status of implementation of the Recommendations/Observations contained in the 126th, and 127th Report of the Standing Committee on Personnel. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also moves for leave to introduce a bill further to amend the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.
In the Rajya Sabha, the motion for the election to the council of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, will be presented. However, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have been witnessing disruptions, protests, and sloganeering by opposition members, leading to repeated adjournments since the Monsoon Session began on June 20.
The government has expressed its readiness for a discussion on the Manipur issue, but the opposition parties are insisting on conducting the discussion under a rule that includes voting. In an effort to foster cooperation, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has written a letter to two opposition leaders in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, urging them to engage in the debate on the Manipur issue while rising above party lines. The Home Minister highlighted this during his response to the debate on the Multi-State Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2022, in the Lok Sabha and also mentioned it in a tweet on Tuesday.
