Panaji: Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Roman Catholic Church, in a video message, said that the Manipur riots is not a Hindu-Christian conflict but that it is a tribal conflict. He said not to give a religious color to the riots taking place in Manipur. Governor of Goa, PS Sreedharan Pillai said that the people of Kerala must listen to the words of the Cardinal.
Sreedharan Pillai also asked the Malayali community to understand these issues and to work for national interests by comforting all those who are in distress.
In a video dated July 26, 2023, Cardinal Oswald Gracias revealed the reality of the Manipur issue. In his video message, the Cardinal said that the conflict in Manipur is not religious but a long standing enmity between two ethnic groups.
Cardinal Oswald Gracias also said that in the conflict both temples and churches were destroyed and heinous crimes against humanity were done. He also requested everyone must cooperate to bring peace to the North Eastern state.
The Cardinal also said that he had spoken with the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) and discussed the plans of the organization. He said that discussions were made on how to restore peace and how the church can involve in contributing to it.
He said that more churches and temples have been destroyed that what is reported. He said that we must help them rebuild it.
Oswald Gracias is an Indian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He was elected president of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India in 2010. He was also appointed as one of the eight-member Council of Cardinals established by Pope Francis to help with governing the Catholic Church and reforming its administration.
