Bengaluru: ISRO Chairman S. Somnath expressed confidence that Vikram, the lander of India’s third lunar mission Chandrayaan-3, will be able to make a soft-landing on the Moon’s surface on August 23 even if all the sensors and two of its engines stop working.
He clarified that the Vikram lander is designed in such a way that it can survive failures. S Somnath said that the propulsion system has been designed in a fool-proof manner to work well.
“If everything fails, if all the sensors fail, nothing works, still it (Vikram) will make a landing. That’s how it has been designed — provided that the propulsion system works well,” Mr Somanath said.
These words of the ISRO chairman will be the answer to those who are doubtful and worried whether Chandrayaan 3 will land safely on the lunar surface. It is believed that the vessel sent to study the surface of the moon will complete the mission beautifully. ISRO stated that the spacecraft’s fourth orbital descent process has also been successfully completed. With this, the distance between the moon and the spacecraft is only 177 km.
Chandrayaan 3 has successfully completed its orbital phase and is approaching its final destination. Now the spacecraft will reach a circular orbit close to the moon. Then on the 16th, the landing module, which includes the lander and rover, will separate from the propulsion module. After that, the craft will be placed in an orbit called Perilune, which is located 30 kilometers near the moon. Soft landing operations will start from here. It will happen on August 23.
