THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has shared new updates on its historic mission, Chandrayaan-3, as the spacecraft gradually approaches the Moon. Chandrayaan-3 is expected to make its first soft-landing attempt in the Moon’s south pole region on August 23rd at 5:45 pm Indian time.
Currently, the Lander module of Chandrayaan-3, comprising the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover, has successfully reduced its orbit to 113 km x 157 km through a successful deboosting operation. The second and final deboosting operation has also been completed successfully.
Launched on July 14th this year, Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2, aiming to demonstrate end-to-end capabilities in safe landing and roving on the lunar surface.
The second deboosting operation of the lander module of the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft is scheduled for August 20th, Sunday, according to ISRO. The first deboosting took place on Friday evening.
The Lander Module of Chandrayaan-3 successfully separated from the Propulsion Module on Thursday, 35 days after the satellite was launched in July.
Deboosting involves the process of slowing down a spacecraft to position it in a specific orbit.
