Aizawl: A tragic incident has unfolded in Mizoram as a railway bridge under construction collapsed, leading to the devastating loss of 17 workers. This heart-wrenching event occurred in the Sairang area, situated approximately 20 kilometers away from Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. Chief Minister Zoramthanga has shared that rescue operations are currently underway at the site.
The collapse of the iron bridge transpired around ten in the morning, while the construction was in its final stages. Numerous workers were present during the accident, and it’s believed that a significant number remain trapped under the wreckage. The death toll is sadly anticipated to rise as search and rescue efforts persist.

A police officer has reported, “Seventeen bodies have been recovered from the debris so far… many others are still missing.”
Mizoram’s Chief Minister expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and conveyed his hopes for a swift recovery for those who sustained injuries.
PM Narendra Modi, deeply saddened by the bridge mishap, extended his sympathies to the grieving families. He also announced a relief measure of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased and an amount of ₹50,000 for the injured.

Sabyasachi De, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the Northeast Frontier Railways, conveyed that railway officials have rushed to the scene of the incident. Senior representatives from the Northeast Frontier Railway are expected to visit the site to assess the situation firsthand.
