Congress and CPI (M) reluctant to take up opposition convener post; move to impose it on Nitish Kumar, RJD opposes

New Delhi: The role of convener within the united opposition coalition I.N.D.I.A. has encountered resistance from certain parties, specifically CPI (M) and Congress, both of which have communicated their refusal to take up the convener position. Notably, the alliance has been informed of their unwillingness to assume this role. Noteworthy demands from regional parties have advocated for Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to assume the convener post. In response, Congress has released an official statement clarifying its stance.

Sources indicate that a pivotal decision regarding this matter is slated for deliberation during the upcoming third meeting of the opposition alliance, scheduled to take place in Mumbai tomorrow. The position held by the left parties is that the appointment of a convener should be avoided, opting instead for the establishment of a collaborative secretariat inclusive of all participating parties. Among their assertions is the representation of leaders based in Delhi.

Considerable attention has been directed towards Nitish Kumar as a potential convener. Reports suggest that both Congress and Trinamool are endorsing this proposition. The conclusive determination, whether Nitish Kumar accepts the convener role or an alternative candidate is chosen, is anticipated to arise from discussions in the forthcoming meeting. Intriguingly, the proposal of Nitish Kumar as convener has faced opposition from ally RJD.

Sharad Pawar is poised to be a focal point in the impending gathering of opposition parties in Mumbai. An additional point of contention pertains to whether the party led by the prominent opposition figure will persist in its participation within the alliance. With Congress leaders having already expressed their support for promoting Rahul Gandhi as the prime ministerial candidate, the meeting may also witness inquiries and discussions surrounding this decision.
