Lok Sabha elections: second phase of polling underway

New Delhi: Voting of the second phase of Lok Sabha elections has started in 11 states and in the Union Territory of in Puducherry. 11 states include Tamil Nadu, Karnataka,Maharashtra,Odisha and Uthar Pradesh. Fate of 1596 candidates will be decided by the people today.

38 constituencies move to polling booths and voting of Vellore has been cancelled as tax officials recovered rupees 10.5 lakh from alleged associates of DMK candidate Kathir Anand, the son of DMK treasurer Durai Murugan. 11.53 crore was also seized from an associate.

Polling is progressing in Tamil Nadu’s Arakkonam, Arani, Chennai Central, Chennai North, Chennai South, Chidambaram, Coimbatore, Gudallur, Dharmapuri, Dindigal, Erode, Kallukurichi, Kanhipuram, Kanyakumari, Karur, Krishnagiri, Madhura, Mayiladumthurai, Nagapattanam, Namakkal, Neelagiri, Peramballur, Pollachi, Ramanathapuram, Selam, Sivagamga, Sriperumbuthur, Thenkasi,Thanchavur, Theni, Thiruvallur, Thoothukkudi, Thiruchirappally, Thirunelveli, Thiruppur, Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Virudunagar.

Voting of Tripura East has been deferred to April 23 due to the law and order situation.

Prominent personalities for election today are former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, Nikhil Kumaraswami, Sumalatha, Sadananda Gowda, Veerappa Moily, Hema Malini, Anpumani Ramdoss, Danish Ali, Farooq Abdulla, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Asok Chawan, Pon Radhakrishnan and Kanimozhi.

Seventeenth Lok Sabha election is in seven phases on April 11,18,23,29, May 6,12 and 19. Counting is on May 23.
