New Delhi: In response to recent developments surrounding the invitations from the Rashtrapathi Bhawan for a G20 dinner scheduled for September 9, where they were issued on behalf of the ‘President of Bharat,’ External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar made a subtle comment aimed at the Opposition parties. He emphasised that the term ‘India that is Bharat’ is enshrined in the country’s Constitution.
During an exclusive interview with ANI, Minister S. Jaishankar pointed out that the significance of the word ‘Bharat’ is also reflected in the Constitution. “India, that is Bharat, it is there in the Constitution. Please, I would invite everybody to read it,” S. Jaishankar said.
When asked about the reaction of opposition parties and whether the government intends to reposition India as Bharat coinciding with the G20 summit, the minister explained, “Look when you say Bharat in a sense, a meaning and understanding and a connotation that comes with it and that is reflected in our Constitution as well.”
Opposition parties have accused the government of resorting to “drama” due to their collective reference to their bloc as INDIA. In contrast, BJP leaders have strongly supported the government’s move.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan posted on ‘X’ a picture of the dinner invitation to him from the President and wrote a few lines from the national anthem.
“This should have happened earlier. This gives great satisfaction to the mind. ‘Bharat’ is our introduction. We are proud of it. The President has given priority to ‘Bharat’. This is the biggest statement to come out of the colonial mindset,” the minister said.
