Mumbai: The Congress party witnessed a high profile defection today, when their party spokesperson, Priyanka Chthurvedi, quit the grand old party and joined the Shiv Sena within hours.

She announced her decision to join the Shiv Sena in a press conference along with Shiv Sena supremo, Uddhav Thackeray.

While Priyanka Chathurvedi said she was grateful for Shiv Sena for welcoming her as a family member into the party, she also gave reasons for quitting the party she had worked for 10 years.

She was disappointed by Congress leadership’s apathy towards her after she complained of misbehaviour by party workers and their derogatory words against her in a press conference a few days ago at Mathura.

Priyanka Chathurvedi, in her resignation letter to the Congress leadership, said, “What saddens me is that despite the safety, dignity, empowerment of women being promoted by the party and has been your call to action the same is not reflected in the action of some of the members of the party. A serious incident and misbehaviour against me by certain party members, while I was on official duty for the party, has been ignored under the guise of all hands needed for election.

She added, “This indignity to me has been the final factor to convince me to move on and focus on other things outside INC. I would request you to accept my resignation and relieve me of all my roles and responsibilities from the party on an immediate basis and oblige.”

Uddhav Thackeray while welcoming the new entrant to his party said that Shiv Sena workers have got a good sister in Priyanka Chathurvedi and that she will be given a post which will reflect her capacity and intellect.

President of the youth wing of Shiv Sena, Aditya Thackeray, tied the symbolic Shiv-bandhan to Priyanka’s wrist as a symbolic gesture of her joining the party.

Two days back, Priyanka Chathurvedi, had slammed the Congress party in severe terms and said that the grand old party gave preference to lumpen goons and those who worked hard was ignored.

Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson, Shanavas Hussain, said that Congress is a sinking ship and that is why their spokesperson, Priyanka Chathurvedi, defected to the Shiv Sena.
