Amethi: Is Rahul Gandhi a citizen of United Kingdom? The lawyer of independent candidate from Amethi, Dhruv Lal, says the Gandhi scion has claimed that he is a citizen of UK.
Ravi Prakash, the lawyer of Dhruv Lal, said that Rahul Gandhi has declared himself as citizen of UK on the basis of certificate of incorporation of a company registered in that country. The lawyer said that a non citizen cannot contest the Lok Sabha elections.
He accused the Congress President of not providing the details of assets and profits of the company mentioned in the affidavit.
The lawyer also said that there are a number of mistakes in his educational qualification certificates. The original certificates should be presented so that the matter can be laid to rest.
Meanwhile, the Amethi returning officer has postponed the scrutiny of Rahul Gandhi’s nomination papers to 22 April.
The allegation of Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship has been around for some time now. It was first raised by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy. He had claimed that the Gandhi scion had identified himself as a British citizen on company documents multiple times from 2003 to 2009.
Swamy referred to British company law papers that allegedly showed Rahul as being a British national in the documents. The company is now defunct.
The matter is presently under investigation by the Home Ministry.
Rahul Gandhi was also accused of carrying an Italian passport.
