Rajasthan: Realizing the threat of water shortage faced by many regions in the country the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised to set up a dedicated Ministry at the Center to tackle the water scarcity of the country. He said that the new ministry will be called ‘Jal Shakti Ministry’.
In an election rally, the Prime Minister said, “In this region, water scarcity is an issue an I am aware of it. We have decided to constitute a dedicated ministry named as ‘Jal Sakti Ministry’, to tackle the issue. It will happen for the first time in India.”
The main focus of the ministry would be to ensure the optimal utilization of water in the country. Narendra Modi promised the people of Rajasthan, reeling under water scarcity, that he will do his best to get enough water to the people.
While 18% of the world’s population resides in India the people have access to only 4% of usable water resources. According to reports about 163 million Indians lack access to safe drinking water.
The ground water level is also alarmingly low now. The vagaries of monsoons can have a destructive effect on farmers and the common man alike. A drought will affect millions of people across the country both directly and indirectly.
With such a huge threat of water scarcity facing the country, the Prime Minister’s effort to tackle the issue by setting up a new ministry is praise worthy. The attention to water scarcity in India is long overdue because it is a crisis slowly growing with increased pressure on the limited water resources of the nation.
