New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, said that the horrific Nirbhaya gang rape case in December 2012 was blown out of proportion by the media.
During 2012, Congress was ruling party in the Center and in power in the state of Delhi.
In an interview to a National media the longest serving and former Chief Minister of Delhi said that the rape was just made sensational by the media. She said that little children are being raped and only small columns in newspapers carry the story, whereas one rape case was put into a political scandal.
In the explosive interview the Congress leader also said that Delhi police was responsible for CCTV installations and ensuring proper street lighting to reduce the crime against women in the state capital.
Surprisingly, by blaming the police for not doing enough to protect women from harm, Sheila Dikshit has in effect blamed the UPA government for the lapse in security. The Delhi police falls under the control of the Central government.
She also said that she did not have any solutions to ensure women safety because it does not come under her purview.
Sheila Dikshit was the Chief Minister of Delhi from 1998 to 2012. She is contesting the Lok Sabha election from the North East Delhi.
The Congress leader was speaking about the Nirbhaya case in which a 23-year-old woman was brutally raped, tortured, and killed by six men in a moving bus in Delhi. The case stunned the consciousness of the country. Huge protests followed which engulfed the whole of India during that time.
