BJP Yuva Morcha leader in West Bengal, Priyanka Sharma, arrested for sharing a meme of Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: The mother of a BJP Yuva Morcha leader, Priyanka Sharma, is worried about her daughter who was arrested and jailed for sharing a morphed photo of West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee. The leader’s mother says that her daughter was arrested just because she worked for the BJP.

Priyanka’s mother said, “My daughter was arrested because she used to work for the BJP. This is all part of a big plot. This is the first time she is far away from us. Had she been a TMC worker nothing bad would have happened to her, this is all done by TMC. The fact that she is in jail has increased our worries.”

Priyanka Sharma was arrested on Friday and sent to jail for 14 days.

Even Priyanka’s brother was not allowed to see her first. The authorities relented only after intense pressure was mounted on the police. Her brother alleges that Priyanka’s security is at risk and says that even her entry in jail was not recorded within 24 hours of the arrest.

BJYM District President, Om Prakash Singh said that there was nothing vulgar or shameful in the photo Priyanka had shared. The photo was already viral in social media.

He accused Mamata Banerjee for curbing freedom of expression.

The BJYM leader said, “The police have not put a non-bailable warrant against her. She is not allowed to meet her family or anyone. We will take legal course of action and also carry out protests against this action by the police. We will not stay silent when TMC is trying to end the freedom of speech in West Bengal.”

It must be noted that this is not the first instance when the West Bengal Chief Minister is showing intolerance against those who criticize her.  In 2012 a professor of Jadavpur University was arrested for forwarding a cartoon of Mamata Banerjee. That year she called a student ‘Maoist’ for questioning her government’s policies.

While Congress is vocal against Narendra Modi for curbing freedom of expression, it has been silent on Mamata Banerjee’s undemocratic rule in West Bengal.  Over the years the TMC workers had brutally killed many people for opposing Mamata Banerjee’s rule in West Bengal.

Congress workers in West Bengal are feeling alienated from their central leadership because as they fall prey to TMC goon, their leader, Rahul Gandhi, is publically supporting Mamata Banerjee in her tantrums against Narendra Modi. Many grass root level leaders are switching their allegiance to the BJP for protection from Mamata Banerjee’s TMC workers.
