NEW DELHI: Fifteen years after the Saket District Court in New Delhi, on October 18, 2023, found five individuals guilty of the murder of journalist Soumya Vishwanathan.
Soumya Vishwanathan, then 25 years old, worked as a television journalist in New Delhi. She was the only daughter of Vishwanathan and Madhavi, who hailed from Kerala.
On the night of September 30, 2008, Soumya was driving home after her work in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj when she was attacked by a group of robbers on Nelson Mandela Marg. She was shot while attempting to escape.
The murder case was registered at the Vasant Vihar Police Station.
Later, the five accused, namely Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Baljeet Malik, Ajay Sethi, and Ajay Kumar, were arrested in March 2009.
The breakthrough in the Soumya Vishwanathan murder case occurred during the investigation of another similar crime. On March 19, 2009, a call center executive named Jigisha Ghosh was shot dead, leading the investigators to Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, and Baljeet Malik. During interrogation, the accused also confessed to the murder of Soumya Vishwanathan, leading to the subsequent arrests of their accomplices, Ajay Sethi and Ajay Kumar.
