NEW DELHI: On Monday, United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, issued a stern warning against “calls for Jihad” on the streets of Britain, while reaffirming the country’s commitment to combating anti-Semitism.
This caution came in response to a series of protests that took place in London and other cities, including Birmingham, Cardiff, and Belfast, where supporters of Hamas demonstrated in solidarity with Palestinians.
Sunak emphasized that “calls for Jihad pose a threat to both the Jewish community and the democratic values of the UK,” stating, “This past weekend, we witnessed hate on our streets. Calls for Jihad not only endanger the Jewish community but also our democratic principles. We will never tolerate anti-Semitism in our country, and we expect the police to take all necessary actions to confront extremism head-on.”
Additionally, Sunak expressed his support for Israel, acknowledging the terror attack the country faced from the terrorist group Hamas. He affirmed the UK’s solidarity with Israel and reiterated its right to defend itself and retaliate against Hamas.
