VISAKHAPATNAM: In the latest update, the death toll has reached 14 people, with 40 others injured, following a collision between two passenger trains in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district on October 29.
The incident took place at around 7:10 pm when the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada passenger special train (08504) collided with the Visakhapatnam-Palasa passenger (08532) at Kantakapalli of Vizianagaram district.
The Palasa passenger train struck the Rayagada passenger train from behind.
This tragic accident transpired when the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada passenger train had stopped due to a break in an overhead cable, and the Visakhapatnam-Palasa service rammed into it from the rear, causing two carriages of the stationary train to derail.
In response to the accident, the Ministry of Railways has released helpline numbers, and a railway helpline has been set up at Visakhapatnam railway station in Andhra Pradesh. The Vizianagaram district administration and railway authorities have collaboratively established helplines to provide prompt information to the families, relatives, and others affected. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased. He reviewed the situation and expressed condolences to those who lost their lives in the accident.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that all passengers from the accident train have been safely relocated. Special trains have been arranged departing from Visakhapatnam to accommodate the affected passengers.
