New Delhi: After the humiliating defeat of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) will meet today for introspection. Reports say that leaders will open up their disgruntlement at the top leadership in the crucial CWC.
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Kamal Nath, has skipped the meeting, which might point to dissatisfaction with the top leadership. More reports are awaited.
Congress leaders are stunned at the consecutive defeat at the Lok Sabha elections. Many are unhappy about the top leadership and have called for deeper scrutiny and a leadership change to salvage the party from total annihilation.
The leader of the Congress Party in 16th Lok Sabha, Mallikargun Kharge said, “How to improve the mistakes we committed and how to make the party strong. All of us will try to make the party strong and will try to improve our mistake.”
Another Congress leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said, “This was an obvious result. In next three to four months we have to contest elections. There is no leadership in the Congress party.”
The Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi could not make any visible improvements in the party’s seat tally in Parliament. The party could win only 52 Lok Sabha seats, not even enough seats to claim the position of leader of opposition.
Many Congress workers and leaders have already begun questioning the leadership of the Gandhi scion. His poor leadership and lack of communication skills and tact has cost the party dearly, not once but twice. He also failed to win over allies and the Mahagathbandan fell apart as soon as it began.
Rahul Gandhi’s failure was complete when he lost his home bastion, Amethi, to BJP’s Smriti Irani. It is only natural that Congress workers question a leader who could not win from his own constituency.
The CWC is the highest decision making body of the Congress party. It is believed that Rahul Gandhi will offer his resignation at the meeting today. As is the usual practice there is a big chance that his resignation will not be accepted by the leaders.
However, continuous defeat under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership might make things different this time. Most congress supporters wish for a leadership change in the party and many question the unopposed power of the Gandhi family.
If the disgruntled leaders raise the flag of revolt, then Congress will witness a period of internal strife and break up. If not the leadership will stay intact under the poor yet authoritarian leadership of the Gandhi family.
