New Delhi: The BJP has announced the party’s candidate for the post of Speaker in the 17th Lok Sabha. Om Prakash Birla who is the two time MP from Kota, Rajasthan is the BJP candidate. He has the support of ten parties including YSR Congress and the BJD.
The 56 year old Birla has also served as Member of Assembly in Rajasthan for three times. His election to the post of Speaker will be a smooth affair as BJP itself as a comfortable 303 seats in the lower house. Together with their allies in NDA the number is 352. Already YSR Congress and BJD has promised their support.
Congress is also expected to back Birla’s candidature to the post of Speaker. Meanwhile, Congress leader, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, said that the grand old party and its allies have decided to support the BJP candidate.
Birla has been an astute parliamentary during the previous Lok Sabha. He has a 86% attendance and has asked 671 questions and participated in 163 debates. He also introduced 6 private bills in the Parliament during the 16th Lok Sabha.
The election to the post of Speaker will be held on Wednesday.
Earlier, Om Prakash Birla, went to the former Speaker Sumitra Mahajan’s residence to visit the outgoing speaker of the house.
